Voters urged to register to have their say in May

South Ayrshire Council are encouraging residents to have their say in the Local Government Elections on Thursday 5 May. 

You must be on the electoral register in order to vote, so with the deadline fast approaching, we are urging people who would like to vote and are not registered at their current address, to do so before midnight on Monday 18 April.

Anyone who lives in Scotland who will be 16 years old or over on Thursday 5 May can register to vote. You can choose to vote in a number of ways - in person, by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote in your place (known as a proxy vote).

Eileen Howat, Returning Officer for South Ayrshire Council, said: "Time is running out to make sure you can vote in the upcoming Local Government Election.

"This election is an important opportunity to have your say on who will represent you and have an influence in the decision making around issues that affect your day-to-day life.

"If you'd like to elect someone who you feel could make a difference in your area, I would urge you to register to vote. It's really simple and only takes five minutes."    

Andy O'Neill, Head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland, said: "You can't have your say in these elections unless you are registered to vote.

"If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don't need to take any action. If in doubt, you can check with your electoral registration office by emailing ero@ayrshire-vjb.gov.uk "
