What can be recycled?

You can recycle the following:

  • Batteries
  • Books/Tapes/Videos
  • Car Batteries/Engine Oil
  • Cardboard
  • Domestic cooking oil
  • Drinks Cans/Food Tins
  • Garden waste
  • Gas Cylinders (empty)
  • General Waste
  • Glass Bottles/Jars

  • Scrap metal
  • Small Textiles (Clothes)/Shoes
  • Wood waste
  • Soil/Rubble

Our Recycling Centres can't take paint where the tins or tubs still have liquid paint in them. You would need to contact a specialist waste contractor. We will take tins or tubs where they are completely dried out. If there's any residue you can either fill it with sand, or leave the lid off to dry it out.

Disposing of upholstered furniture

If you want to dispose of upholstered seating, you can bring the following upholstered items to our Ayr household waste recycling centre.

  • armchairs
  • electrical recliner chairs
  • futons, bean bags, sofa cushions and floor cushions
  •  home office chairs
  • kitchen and dining room chairs
  • sofa beds
  • sofas
  •  stools and foot stools.

This list includes any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam. If you are unsure or have any queries check with a member of staff on site.

Once you arrive at Ayr household waste recycling centre, place your items in the specific bin for upholstered seating. Ask our onsite staff if you are not sure where to go.

Many upholstered seating items are coated with a flame retardant containing persistent organic pollutants (or POPs). By keeping upholstered seating separate from other waste items, we can avoid contamination in the recycling process.

If your items are undamaged, in good condition and still have their fire safety labels, consider donating them to your local charity shop instead
