Tips on savings

It can be hard to save money if you are on a tight budget, you can save as little or as much as you can afford.

General tips on saving, how to start saving and different types of accounts can be found at the Money Savings Experts page.

Check out our Credit Union section to find your local Credit Union.

Saving with Universal Credit

You can open a Help to Save account if you're any of the following:

  • receiving Working Tax Credit
  • entitled to Working Tax Credit and receiving Child Tax Credit
  • claiming Universal Credit and you (with your partner if it's a joint claim) earned £604.56 or more from paid work in your last monthly assessment period

This scheme will give you an extra 50p for every £1 you save over four years. The GOV.UK website explains how it works, how to apply and if it will affect your benefits.
