Important Information About Council Services Affected by Storm Éowyn

The following Council services have been affected by the impact of Storm Eowyn:

Bin Collections

Normal service has resumed.

Potential Additional green bin collection -  Ballantrae area

Our waste management teams are aware that residents in some areas of South Carrick have additional food waste as  a result of the power outage. Our teams will therefore aim to  provide an  additional green bin service on Thursday 30 January, to those households in the Ballantrae area who normally have a scheduled green bin collection every third Thursday.

In anticipation that this additional service goes ahead, residents in the Ballantrae area should put their green bins out for collection alongside food caddies and any additional bagged food waste by 6am on Thursday 30 January.

Please note that while we aim to be able to provide this service, it is dependent on resources.

A green bin collection was carried out on Monday 27 January in Barr. This means that we expect residents will have sufficient capacity within their green bins until their next scheduled collection and an additional green bin collection will not take place this week in Barr.

If your household has excess blue bin waste, you  can dispose of this free of charge at our recycling centres.

Excess Food Waste - South Carrick

We know that some residents in the South Carrick area have excess amounts of food waste to dispose of due to a prolonged localised power cut.

To help support the community at this difficult time, our Waste Management team will uplift any food waste that is presented beside food waste caddies on your normal scheduled collection day this week.

If you can, please remove any food waste that you placed in your green general waste bin and leave this bagged and ready for collection beside your food waste caddie.

Trading Standards information & advice

Avoid Rogue Traders After Storm Damage

Many residents have experienced storm damage to their properties, and Trading Standards is urging caution when choosing a repairer. Reports have emerged of people being significantly overcharged - in one case, a resident was quoted over £2000 to fix two loose tiles.

To protect yourself from potential scams, residents are advised to:

• Carefully consider who they hire for repairs.
• Obtain a written quote or estimate beforehand to make an informed decision.
• Ensure they know the price before work begins and have the full name, address, and contact details of the trader.
• Be cautious when contracting businesses through social media, as they may be difficult to reach in case of issues.
• Always seek a second opinion before agreeing to roofing work, and do not feel pressured into making payments via cheque or bank transfer.

For those looking for reliable, registered traders, the South Ayrshire Trusted Trader Scheme provides a list of vetted professionals.

For more information, visit www.trustedtrader.scot/SouthAyrshire or call 0333 444 7015.

Damaged property

Our Building Standards team has carried out necessary immediate safety works to safeguard the public, on a number of local buildings following Storm Eowyn.

Please remember, if you are a property owner, it is your responsibility to carry out routine periodic inspections and maintenance of your property. This can help  ensure that chimneys, coping stones and roofing materials remain secure and are not at risk of becoming detached or falling.

Owners and residents are also reminded to inspect boundary walls and fences to ensure they are secure, stable and not at risk of collapse. These inspections are critical after a storm event.  It is also important that you make your insurance company aware of any issues, as a result of the storm, as soon as possible.
