School estate - planning for improvement

Investment in schools

Through the capital investment programme we have made significant improvement to school buildings and learning environments for children and young people, teaching staff, school support staff and the wider community.

Examples of school investment

The Maybole Community Campus opened for pupils and staff in September 2023. The campus delivered and co locates Carrick Academy, Culzean Primary, St Cuthbert's Primary and Early Years provision. In addition, a state of the art leisure facility including a pool also forms part of the campus.

The delivery of Prestwick North Education Campus opened its doors to pupils and staff in August 2022.  This project brought together Glenburn Primary and St Ninian's Primary into one building delivering modern teaching and shared learning facilities for both schools. In addition, the new Prestwick North Early Years Centre for 2 - 5 year old's opened at the same time co located on the old Glenburn Primary school site.

A reconfiguration project was completed at Heathfield Primary School in August 2024 to convert three classrooms and supporting accommodation into a dedicated Extended Learning Facility for young people with Additional Support Needs.  The works included a full refurbishment and alteration of existing classrooms in the school, along with the creation of a sensory room, two quiet rooms, new accessible changing space and a dedicated secure play area in the school grounds, as well as improved parking. In addition, there are agreed proposals to further enhance the accessible facilities at the school through the construction of an accessible multi-use games area.  With the generous support of the Cruyff Foundation, the school's 'Cruyff Court' will be the first of its kind in Scotland.  Work on the court will commence in July 2025.

Future investment

Works will continue to progress on several school construction projects in 2025.

The start of a phased programme of major alterations at Dalmilling Primary School commenced with the demolition of the former Cherry Tree Nursery building and the removal of temporary classrooms in the school playground. These works have created space for an extension of the school's gym hall, dining facilities and reconfigured reception and management areas.

Struthers Primary School will be extended once more to accommodate pupils arising from the major housing development in North-East Troon. Construction of a four-classroom extension will commence in 2025 and will include a new school library, covered play area for the upper school, a new classroom garden along with a multi-purpose open area, general purpose space and new toilets.

Girvan Academy will benefit from alterations to classrooms and other spaces on the school's first floor, along with a joint community sponsored project to refurbish the school theatre and make this more suitable for school and community use.

Confirmed plans for the new-build Girvan Primary School have been agreed with Keir Construction appointed to deliver the £36m investment.  The project will deliver a new 16 classroom primary school with dedicated Additional Support Needs base and separate early years centre.  The project will commence in August 2025 with a completion date of January 2027.
