South Ayrshire Remembers - VE Day 2021
On Saturday 8 May 2021, we will commemorate the 76th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). This provides us with the opportunity to remember some of our heroes who served during the Second World War.
After almost six years of fighting, Germany surrendered to the Allied forces, bringing an end to the conflict across Europe. In Britain, thousands of civilians took to the streets to celebrate the news, eager to spend time with loved ones - a feeling which currently resonates with many of us.
Eileen Howat, Chief Executive of South Ayrshire Council, said: "VE Day is a poignant day in history which should not be forgotten, so it's important to spare a few moments to reflect upon the sacrifices of those who bravely fought for their country.
"Once again, COVID-19 restrictions mean that VE Day will be marked predominantly online this year. However, I'd urge anyone that is making plans to commemorate the day in person, to do so in line with Scottish Government guidance."
We will commemorate VE Day virtually across our social media channels Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
