At Tuesday's Cabinet meeting (14 March) Councillors agreed to extend the trial Motorhome Parking Scheme in Troon and Ballantrae.

The decision follows the successful implementation of permanent motorhome parking bays in Ayr and Girvan.

From Saturday 1 April, several bays will be available for motorhomes at the Harbour Road Car Park (Ballast Bank) in Troon and there will also be five motorhome bays at the North Shore Car Park near the ferry terminal (reduced from ten last year).

Also from 1 April, motorhomes and caravans will be able to use the North Shore Road Car Park near the toilet block at Barassie.

A motorhome only scheme will also be trialled again in The Vennell Car Park, Ballantrae.

All these bays will operate on a trial basis until 30 September.

A parking fee of £10 per night, for a maximum of three nights, will give access to waste disposal, including chemical waste facilities. Those staying at the North Shore Road Car Park at Barassie will also be able to use the nearby public toilets and washroom facilities.

After three nights, motorhomes and caravans (at the North Shore Road Car Park at Barassie) must leave the sites before 6:00pm the following day and can't return for 24 hours. Tents, awnings, and generators will not be allowed at any of the sites.

The parking bays can't be booked in advance, so access is based on a first come, first served basis. Payment is made on arrival via a cashless parking system.

Councillor Alec Clark, Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs Portfolio Holder said: "I look forward to the implementation of the motorhome scheme in Troon and Ballantrae which will not only be a welcome stop for mobile home owners as they enjoy the beautiful Ayrshire Coast, it will also help to generate economic benefit for the local tourist economy which is a priority for South Ayrshire Council."

Councillor Bob Pollock, Economic Development Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "Following the success of the permanent schemes in Ayr and Girvan, we're expanding the trials in Troon. Caravans will be allowed at the North Road Car Park at the Barassie end, but all other sites remain motorhomes only. As always, officers from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance will make sure the rules are followed so everyone has an enjoyable stay."
