Learning for Sustainability

Learning for Sustainability provides a framework for learners, educators, schools and their wider communities to build a socially-just, sustainable and equitable society. It encourages a whole-school and community approach by combining global citizenship, sustainable development education, and outdoor learning.

Learning for Sustainability is an important component of The Curriculum for Excellence, an entitlement for learners, and a core part of teachers' professional standards and works towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals in a variety of education settings.

Eco Schools

Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries, making it the largest educational programme on the planet.

For over 25 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven-Step framework in order to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award.

Eco-Schools develops pupils' skills, raises environmental awareness, improves the school environment and creates financial savings for schools as well as a whole host of other benefits.

Energy Classes with the Energy Agency

South Ayrshire Council partners with the Energy Agency to deliver energy efficiency lessons in primary schools. Teachers are provided with suitable resources and training to develop an action plan that can be replicated in other areas and schools. These energy lessons can form part of the Eco Schools work across primary schools.

South Ayrshire Ranger Service Environmental Education

South Ayrshire Ranger Service aims at connecting children, young people and adults with nature. The service provides tailored activities to groups and schools which increases awareness, understanding, care and responsible use of the outdoors.

By nurturing a positive connection between the public and the natural world, the Ranger Service is supporting the development of a long-lasting love and respect for our planet, increasing people's understanding of how ecosystems work and our interconnection as a species to life in its different forms on Earth.

Provost School Footprint Challenge

South Ayrshire Council created the Provost's School Footprint Challenge - a competition between all secondary schools in South Ayrshire - to encourage young people to look after the environment and empower them to reduce carbon emissions related to their schools' activities and buildings. The Provost School Footprint Challenge encourages schools to engage in national campaigns such as Earth Hour.

With all nine South Ayrshire Council secondary schools taking part, the challenge has a proven track record of generating financial savings for the Council. This will help meet the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Act 2019 and requirements, while creating a legacy for the future by embedding sustainability considerations as part of everyday life for our young people.
