Council reveals ambitious affordable homes target

Mainholm affordable housing 400 x 400

South Ayrshire Council is working with partners to deliver approximately 861 affordable homes across South Ayrshire by 2029.

The Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) outlines that Scottish Government funding of £64.644m will be used, along with Council and private sector funding to complete the ambitious housing programme.

The plan outlines multiple ways for new build properties to meet energy efficiency objectives. This will not only help meet government targets, but will allow tenants to heat their homes more efficiently and reduce monthly energy bills.

There is also a commitment from the Council and Registered Social Landlords to continue to work with partners to ensure affordable housing is accessible to all. The SHIP says that 20 wheelchair accessible homes will be built each year.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Buildings, Housing and Environment Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "Supplying 861 affordable homes over the next five years' is a challenging target, particularly in the current economic climate, but we're determined to succeed.

"We have an impressive new-build programme, and at least 12% of these homes are suitable for wheelchair users. We're also bringing unused properties back into use and hopefully some of these homes can become more accessible too.

"We're continuing to exceed our affordable housing targets and most importantly meet the needs of tenants."

The Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) will now be submitted to the Scottish Government.
