16 Days of Action to End Violence Against Women

NEWS UPDATED

We are once again supporting the 16 Days of Action to End Violence Against Women, which raises awareness of gender based violence and engages the public through a number of events from Saturday 25 November until Sunday 10 December 2023.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women takes place on Saturday 25 November, signalling the start of the 16 Days of Action. Over the course of the 16 days, focus will be on how to change attitudes and behaviours in order to prevent further violence against women and girls, ending on Human Rights Day on Sunday 10 December.

A variety of informative events which support the campaign have been organised by our Thriving Communities team, taking place at locations across South Ayrshire. In addition to the Reclaim the Night Walk which takes place on Tuesday 5 December, events include safety sessions for women; film screenings; and the White Ribbon Trophy football tournament.

Councillor Laura Brennan-Whitefield, Chair of the Violence Against Women Partnership, said: "It remains incredibly important that our support against gender based violence does not diminish. By working with our partners to deliver a variety of activities and events, we can continue to shine a light on organisations which provide vital help and guidance to those who may be in need."

Councillor Lee Lyons, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Health and Social Care said: "Despite being an annual campaign, the 16 Days of Action is incredibly important and our support is unwavering. I'm pleased that we have a calendar of events taking place throughout the duration of the 16 days, and I would encourage positive engagement so that we can help to tackle the stigma that still surrounds gender based violence."

You can also show your support by joining the White Ribbon Scotland campaign , pledging not to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.
