Riverside Sports Arena hosts national athletics competition

Riverside athletics

Indoor qualifying heats for the British Championships in athletics were recently held at the new Riverside Sports Arena in Ayr.

Hundreds of talented athletes headed to Ayr to compete in the important qualifying event between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 January. Coaches and spectators were also in attendance to offer support and encouragement.

This is the first time that the arena, which is home to Ayr Seaforth Athletics Club, has hosted a national athletics event since its opening in 2023.

The £8.5m Council project features state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor sporting facilities including an eight lane, 400m running track; a six lane, 60m indoor running track; a field events area; and a 3G all-weather pitch, along with fully accessible changing areas and a café.

Councillor Brian Connolly, South Ayrshire Council's portfolio holder for Sport and Leisure said: "It's fantastic to have a Sports facility in our Portfolio which can host athletics competitions at a national level.  The weekend was a great success, and we look forward to welcoming more events and competitions to the Riverside Sports Arena in the future!"
