Provost hands over robes to South Ayrshire Council Collections

Provost dress robes

Provost Iain Campbell recently handed over the Girvan Provost Dress Robes to South Ayrshire Council's collections at the McKechnie Institute in Girvan.

The robes were accepted in a ceremony held at the McKechnie Institute on Wednesday 21 February.

It is believed that the robes were originally acquired during the term of office of Alexander Telfer from 1903-1909. Of the photographs on display of previous Provosts of South Ayrshire visiting the McKechnie Institute, the last picture to feature these robes was taken in 1974. This would mean that they are being returned to Girvan for the first time in 50 years.

Provost Campbell said: "I made the decision to return the robes to Girvan, where they can rightfully be on display for both locals and visitors to see.  The Girvan Provost Dress Robes are a rich part of South Ayrshire's history and tradition, so I was delighted to see them back where they belong!"

Councillor Alec Clark, South Ayrshire Council's portfolio holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural affairs said: "This marks a significant moment in Girvan's history. Having the robes on display shows the Council's dedication to preserving South Ayrshire's culture."

You can see the robes on display at the McKechnie Institute, Dalrymple Street, Girvan, KA26 9AE. You can view opening times at https://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/article/25080/McKechnie-Institute
