Challenging the perception of Gillies as a mere "countryman," "William Gillies: Modernism and Nation" reveals his embrace of Modernist alternatives, unlocking hidden meanings in his diverse works.

Accompanying the exhibition is a new book on the artist, "William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art" by Andrew McPherson.

Councillor Alec Clark, Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, said: "Gillies loved sketching and painting whilst touring across Scotland - '"Modernism and Nation'"  extends Gillies' legacy, offering audiences across the country a chance to discover a new story about one of our great artists."

Sandy Wood, RSA's Head of Collections said: "We are delighted to be presenting William Gillies: Modernism and Nation, a touring exhibition from the Royal Scottish Academy, which repositions the life and art of one of Scotland's most influential modern masters."

The exhibition is open daily, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 12noon to 5pm.  Entry is free, sponsored by the Royal Scottish Academy and Museums and Galleries Scotland.

The exhibition runs from 2 March - 16 June 2024. Find out more by visiting www.destinationsouthayrshire.co.uk
