South Ayrshire Council Receives Green Flag of Approval for Local Environment
South Ayrshire Council has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award for a number of green spaces by environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful.
The International Green Flag Award recognises green spaces that are well maintained, providing safe spaces for individuals to spend time outdoors and enjoy nature, whilst supporting physical and mental health.
Once again, Belleisle Park, Ayr has won a Green Flag Award with Green Heritage. The other winners include Fullarton Estate, Troon; Newton Park, Ayr; Orchard Gardens and Knockcushan Gardens, Girvan.
In keeping with the Council's commitment to protecting the environment, Keep Scotland Beautiful also awarded all six beaches maintained by South Ayrshire with the Scotland's Beach Award. This means that the beaches at Ayr, Prestwick, Girvan, Maidens, Troon South beach and Barassie have all won this award for the second consecutive year.
Scotland's Beach Awards recognises exceptional beaches which contribute to improving the aesthetic and economic value of the coastline for local communities and visitors. The award is the only national benchmark for local environmental quality celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches.
South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, Councillor Martin Kilbride said: "I'm delighted that South Ayrshire has received these awards for our green spaces and beaches. This is a reflection of the hard work that our Neighbourhood Services team and the extensive network of community groups and volunteers carry out all year round, ensuring that these fragile environments are protected.
"Our parks and beaches are extremely popular with locals and visitors all year round. It's essential that we maintain a high level of cleanliness and excellent water quality, whilst also protecting biodiversity, so that these areas can continue to be enjoyed for years to come."
