Council Supports Adults Seeking Outdoor Employment Through Brand New Education Programme

Outdoor Learning Programme

South Ayrshire Council's Thriving Communities team launched an exciting programme, giving adults the opportunity to access training within outdoor learning.

The aim of the programme is to give participants the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications in an outdoor learning environment and develop a variety of key skills including leadership, coaching and communication which can be transferable across various areas of work.

The programme was delivered from Dolphin House Outdoor Education Centre. The Centre provides a stunning coastal location with direct access to the vibrant Culzean Country Park which enabled participants to relax and develop in a positive learning environment.

Running from January 2025 - March 2025, participants gained an SCQF Level 6 Award in Activity First Aid and undertook courses in Mountain Training, Canoeing, Bike Maintenance and Orienteering. Participants also enjoyed taster sessions in caving, archery, abseiling and gorge walking. Thriving Communities Outdoor Instructors provided advice and feedback throughout the programme to support and mentor participants.

At the end of the programme, participants hosted their family and friends for an action-packed day of activities where they were able to put the skills they had learned into practice. All activities were co-delivered by participants and Thriving Communities Outdoor Instructors.

Following the programme, participants continue to be supported by Thriving Communities to explore further options for moving into employment. A second group of participants are due to begin the programme at the end of April.

Councillor Bob Pollock, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development said: "The Outdoor Learning Programme embodies an array of experiences for those seeking employment in the outdoor industry and is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn new skills while also building resilience and confidence.

"The participants demonstrated a willingness to learn and a positive attitude, and I am sure that they will reap the benefits of the accreditations and experiences they have gained from the programme. I'd like to thank our Thriving Communities team for their hard work and commitment in creating and implementing this programme."
