Am I eligible to vote?

The elections that you can vote in usually depend on your nationality and residency status.

How do I register to vote?

You can register to vote at any time by applying online.

Register to vote on the GOV.UK website.

For the Scottish Parliamentary elections on 6 May 2021 the deadline for registering to vote is Monday 19 April 2021.

How do I vote?

There are 3 different ways to vote: in person, by post or by proxy.

Voting in person

If you choose to vote in person, your poll card will tell you where to go to vote.

Voting by post

If you want to vote by post you must apply in writing to the Electoral Registration Office (details below). Application forms can be obtained from the Electoral Registration Office or on the Electoral Commission website. If your application is granted a postal pack will be sent to the address you request.

Once you've used your postal vote you can't change your mind and vote at a polling station. However, you can cancel your vote by writing to the Electoral Registration Office. Details of the deadline for cancellation are included in your postal pack.

For the Scottish Parliamentary elections on 6 May 2021 the deadline for applying for a postal vote is Tuesday 6 April 2021 at 5pm.

Voting by proxy

If you are unable to vote in person you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf.

Your proxy must be eligible to vote in the election.

For the Scottish Parliamentary elections on 6 May 2021 the deadline for appointing a proxy is Tuesday 27 April 2021 at 5pm. 

Application forms can be obtained from the Electoral Registration Office or on the Electoral Commission website.
