Child Poverty Statistics
Child Poverty Data Report
Public Health Scotland created a detailed Child Poverty Report for South Ayrshire.
Child Poverty After Housing Costs
The End Child Poverty Coalition in conjunction with Loughborough University publish annual figures on Child Poverty after housing costs. These figures are available at a level that includes the whole of South Ayrshire, and shows our currently level of Child Poverty at 20.7%, the same as the Scottish average. This figure has fallen significantly over the past 10 years, as can be seen below:

Child Poverty Before Housing Costs
For a more local approach, data from the Department of Work and Pensions have been used to give an estimate of the percentage of under 16s in low income families, ie families whose household income is below 60% of the contemporary median income. This data is visualised on the map below.

Information and Advice Hub
Our Information and Advice Team support the work needed to realise the aims of the Child Poverty Strategy. By supporting families across South Ayrshire to maximise their household income we are helping to mitigate the impact of child poverty in our communities.
In 2024/25 we helped 409 families with 691 children in those households. A financial gain was identified for 150 families and in total household income was maximised by £815,363. That is an average gain of £5,436 per eligible family.
The Scottish Governement has defined 6 priority groups. We supported these groups as follows:
| Priority Group | Number of Families Helped |
|---|---|
| Lone parent families | 281 families with 460 children |
| Minority ethnic families | 21 families with 41 children |
| Young mothers under 25 | 9 families with 10 children |
| Families where a disability is recorded | 191 families with 313 children |
| Families with 3 or more children | 71 families with 229 children |
| Families with a child under 1 year old | 23 families with 30 children |
Note that some clients may fall under multiple priority groups, for example a young mother under 25 may have a disability and 3 children so would be included in the breakdown 3 times. On average, each client falls in to 2 of the priortiy groups shown.
